plug into lent at St Marks church harrogate

Beginning on Ash Wednesday for 40 days, Lent gives us time to pause, to pray, to reflect and turn our hearts and minds back towards God. By observing this time, we replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert before the celebration of Christ’s triumph over sin and death at Easter.

Lent is often marked by fasting and by giving something up. By depriving ourselves of some small pleasure or indulgence, we offer that sacrifice up to God. An experience of want, however temporary, can help us to appreciate the true abundance in our lives.

But what if rather than giving something up, you could commit to taking something on? We have lots to do during Lent and we’re challenging you to get involved. Attend the B.R.I.C.K. course, book a time slot for 24/7 prayer, read the daily reflections – everyday! Attend our special Lent services…
Plug into Lent and let’s live it together as a family.

10am All age service. Join us at this special service everyone welcome.

12noon-3pm Three hours at the cross.

This year the title of the service is ‘THE THINGS HE CARRIED’.

As we tell the story of the Passion, we shall reflect on different things Jesus carried as he went to the Cross. Physical things, such as the heavy cross-beam, the crown of thorns, and the seamless robe which was taken from him by the soldiers; but also the burdens of our sins and  sorrows, and the hopes of God which he carried in his heart.

The service continues through the 3 hours, but there is opportunity to leave or join at the end of each hour. The meditations are based on a book by Bishop Stephen Cottrell, who wrote the drama scripts ‘The Nail’ which we used last year. Songs, Bible readings, prayers and time for response will also help us to reflect on the meaning of the first Good Friday.

Easter Sunday – 16th April
